<image:title>Articles - Exercise Improves Mental Health - Cognitive health is the clarity of mind, decent memory retention, ability to concentrate, think, and learn. An experience of decline in these measures may be age related, or they may be symptoms of larger underlying health problems. The effects of exercise on the brain can be seen directly. Exercise changes the volume of certain areas of the brain as well as the as the vascular physiology. Exercise appears to have protective effects against cognitive decline as we age and may play a key role in protection against age related mental decline.</image:title>

<image:title>Articles - Exercise Improves Mental Health - According to Ahlskog, et al. (2011), “A rapidly growing literature strongly suggests that exercise, specifically aerobic exercise, may attenuate cognitive impairment and reduce dementia risk.” Aerobic exercise has long-term benefits on cognition, dementia risk, and possibly dementia progression due to improvements in vascular health. This improvement can protect against atherosclerotic cerebrovascular disease and cerebrovascular small vessel disease, which reduces vascular dementia (Ahlskog, Greda, Graff-Radford, & Petersen, 2011). A study on weekly walking exercise over the course of a year showed better gray matter volumes, hippocampal volumes, and cortical volumes as compared with sedentary groups (Ahlskog, Greda, Graff-Radford, & Petersen, 2011).</image:title>

<image:title>Articles - Exercise Improves Mental Health - Our emotions are a strong feeling in response to a stimulus. These can roll into moods which can last for hours. For instance, if your general mood is dour, you may have more emotions like sadness, irritable, sadness. If your mood is cheerful, you may be more likely to feel emotions like happiness, excitement, interest. The emotions we experience are more often within the same family as our mood. Moods can be harder to regulate than emotions since there is a long-lasting stability to them, and it can be difficult to pinpoint triggers to moods compared to emotions.</image:title>

<image:title>Articles - Exercise Improves Mental Health - A meta-analysis and systematic review of 17 papers published from 2005 to 2021 found that physical exercise plays an important role in the reduction of anxiety in older adults. This review found that anxiety levels can be controlled through physical exercise intervention, showing improvement in anxiety scores as compared to the control groups (Wu, Zhang, Yang, & & Jiang, 2022). According to Wu, et al. (2022), “[a]ppropriate physical exercise can not only relieve negative mental states and induce positive mental states but also improve the loneliness, anxiety, depression, and happiness of the elderly.”</image:title>

<image:title>Articles - Exercise Improves Mental Health - High risk factors for diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obesity, are linked to higher prevalence of Alzheimer’s Disease in several meta-analysis or systematic reviews of studies in each of these areas (Barnes, 2011). According to the narrative review of Barnes and Yaffe (2011), the combined risk factors of diabetes, hypertension, obesity, physical inactivity, depression, cognitive inactivity, and smoking may contribute up to half of Alzheimer's disease cases globally. Since these are modifiable risk factors, changing lifestyle behaviors can reduce the risk for not only Alzheimer’s but all-cause dementia as well. Physical inactivity may contribute the largest proportion of Alzheimer’s cases within the United States, and likely the third leading cause globally (Barnes, 2011). Since an exercise regimen has protective effects against diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, it may be a significant factor in reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease within the United States.</image:title>

<image:title>Articles - Exercise Improves Mental Health - In a meta-analysis of 8 randomized controlled trails (paired down from 71) that were adjusted for publication bias, found with a 95% confidence interval that mixed aerobic and anaerobic exercises at moderate intensities found that there are beneficial effects of exercise. The authors of this study claim that due to publication bias, “previous meta-analyses might have inadvertently underestimated the antidepressant effect of exercise” (Schuch, et al., 2016). According to this analysis the most efficacious forms of exercise for older adults experiencing depression are moderate intensity, group training that combines aerobic exercise and resistance training (Schuch, et al., 2016).</image:title>

<image:title>Articles - Exercise Improves Mental Health - High intensity aerobic exercise is linked to reduction of proinflammatory markers in older populations. These markers are linked neuron damage and increased inflammation which has direct impacts on cognition and can be linked to multiple sclerosis and dementia (Cronin, Keohane, Molloy, & & Shanahan, 2017). Available evidence suggests that aerobic exercise has protective effects against these inflammatory markers and can protect cognitive performance in older adults.</image:title>

<image:title>Articles - Fitness May be the Key to Longevity - Exercise can Improve Your Balance</image:title>
<image:caption>Balance training is an important factor towards longevity, reducing the risk of fall which is one of the highest causes of accidental death in the senior population. According to Thomas, et al. (2019), “over 30% of people aged 65 or older…experience on average 1 fall a year.” Eight studies included in a quantitative synthesis showed that aerobic exercise interventions demonstrated an increased positive in balance measures. Resistance protocols also indicated an improvement in balance measures but were not as effective as multicomponent exercise interventions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Fitness May be the Key to Longevity - Beyond the effects on the musculature and heart health, physical activity can also help protect against neurodegenerative disorders. One study has potentially linked exercise to protective effects against Parkinson’s disease. Alpha-synuclein (αS) is a major component of Lewy bodies, which can be found in multiple diseases from Parkinson’s disease to dementia with Lewy bodies.</image:title>
<image:caption>On their own αS are not problematic and they can be important in maintaining synaptic functioning, however, when the protein misfolds and clumps it kills dopamine-producing cells in the brain which is a key trigger to Parkinson’s disease (Wasta, 2022).</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Fitness May be the Key to Longevity - Another study of 18,670 individuals who started exercise in mid-life and continued higher fitness levels saw a lower risk of chronic conditions and suggested morbidity compression as well (Willis BL, 2012). The study focused on a “panel of 8 [chronic conditions] was used for the present analysis: congestive heart failure, ischemic heart disease, stroke, diabetes mellitus, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, Alzheimer disease, and colon or lung cancer.” After the combination of 120,780 person-person years of Medicare follow up, highest levels of fitness measurements saw lower incidence of developing any of the 8 chronic conditions measured in this study.</image:title>

<image:title>Articles - Fitness May be the Key to Longevity - Aerobic exercise is regularly studied and found to offer benefits on cognition. It does not appear that aerobic exercise can reverse cognitive decline, but more so that it has preventative or slowing benefits for cognitive decline by enhancing brain function and structure (Liu-Ambrose, 2009). According to Lui-Ambrose, et al. (2009), “there is evidence to support the hypothesis that resistance training (and balance training) may have cognitive benefits among seniors” and this may be especially important for senior women. Upon conclusion of a 12-month group-based strength and balance training program, senior residents showed improvements in fluid intelligence (Liu-Ambrose, 2009). Having exercise programs that take on cardiovascular as well as resistance training can have a broad range of systemic benefits.</image:title>

<image:title>Articles - Fitness May be the Key to Longevity - Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, often linked to poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle. Death rates are shown “to be inversely related to cardiorespiratory fitness levels, even in the presence of other predictors of cardiovascular mortality such as smoking, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia” (Nystoriak, 2018). Better fitness levels can also partially reverse issues with elevated risk of all-cause mortality associated with higher body mass index (Nystoriak, 2018). One study showed regular physical activity can reduce inflammation and rescue aortic valve endothelial integrity in mice with high cholesterol diets.</image:title>

<image:title>Articles - Fitness May be the Key to Longevity - Aerobic training can reduce total LDL cholesterol and raise HDL cholesterol, lowering the risk of high blood pressure (hypertension) and stroke (Colberg, 2010). Diabetes and hypertension share comorbidities with the risk of those who have both conditions seeing a 66-100% increase in vascular complications than either condition alone (Colberg, 2010). Higher levels of physical fitness reduce the risks of cardiovascular diseases and mortality. All-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality risk is 1.7 to 6.6 times higher in those with low fitness levels and diabetes (Colberg, 2010). Regular exercise can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. Even moderate-intensity exercise can reduce the risk of development of type 2 diabetes, with the Da Quing study in China showing 20 minutes of mild exercise can reduce the risk of diabetes by 46% (Colberg, 2010).</image:title>

<image:title>Articles - Fitness May be the Key to Longevity</image:title>
<image:caption>As we age our body naturally changes, becomes less efficient with changes in metabolism, decreases in lean muscle mass (sarcopenia), cardiovascular changes and more. Exercise can have a protective effect on these systems and many more such as our neurological and skeletal health. The importance of regular and consistent exercise cannot be overstated. Short of overdoing the amount of exercise you do in a day; exercise has positive effects in nearly every aspect of health and aging one can think of.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Fitness May be the Key to Longevity - Diabetes is a common ailment of those over the age of 65, with many estimating over 20% of the senior population having the chronic disease. Since Type 2 diabetes is a significant cause of premature morbidity and mortality, prevention is important (Colberg, 2010). Regular physical activity can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes as well as affect lipid, the risk of cardiovascular events, blood pressure, and quality of life for the better (Colberg, 2010). A single session of aerobic exercise can improve insulin action and glucose tolerance for 24-72 hours, and the risk for someone with type 2 diabetes experiencing hypoglycemia due to prolonged physical activity is minimal. (Colberg, 2010). Resistance training resulted in a decrease in blood-glucose levels for 24 hours after exercise and greater reductions reported in higher volume or intensity exercises (Colberg, 2010).</image:title>

<image:title>Articles - Fitness May be the Key to Longevity - Exercise and Aging - An Overview</image:title>
<image:caption>Studies show that maintaining the minimal quantity and quality of exercising can preserve functional aging and partially reverse the effects of aging, protecting against the risks of death, development of certain types of cancer, and increasing longevity (Gremeaux, 2012). Successful aging requires a maintenance of our physical and mental well-being. This allows us to remain functionally independent. Regular exercise is one of the best preventative approaches toward successful aging (Gremeaux, 2012).</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Thank you for all your help with training. I can’t believe that in 3 short months, I lost 8 pounds and several inches all over my body! My favorite thing is how strong my core is. I can’t believe how great that feels and I notice a real difference when I do normal daily tasks and when I run. I really needed someone to push me with my workouts so I could get the results I wanted and you exceeded my expectations. Your workouts were amazing and I appreciated the fact that they didn’t require much equipment and were so versatile that I didn’t get bored! You also have a natural way of motivating that helped me push myself in our workouts. Your assistance with my nutrition was extremely helpful. I didn’t think I needed too much help in this area before we started working together but soon found out how wrong I was about that. I am eating better than I ever have and feel amazing. I truly appreciate all your help with getting me back in shape!”</image:caption>

<image:caption>"So you might want to tell your future clients of the side effects of you training them. I have two different waist sizes on my jeans, 36 and 34. When I started with you, the 36 were loose and the 34 were tight. Now the 36 fall off and they are loose. You never disclosed this to me and now I want my money back and fat stomach back. Damn you!"</image:caption>

<image:title>Testimonials - ST, physician and daughter of client</image:title>
<image:caption>“I hired Doug and Michelle to help my 82-year-old father with his balance and fitness. My father is a very active man and start going to the gym three times per week in his late 70s. However, he learned one set of exercises and was just repeating those same exercises without appropriate guidance. As such, despite his attempts to remain fit he continued to have balance problems. He fell a couple of times at home, and I worried about him being injured by falling. I decided it was time to do something. I started looking for a personal trainer to work with him. Before starting I looked into several personal trainers and explained that I needed someone with experience with older clients and wanted a focus on balance and proprioception. Doug and Michelle had the experience I was looking for and a clear plan for how they were going to help my dad. After only two months working with Doug, my dad is stronger and has a better balance. No falls recently. They tailor the workouts to my dad and work with him in the convenience of his own home. Their prices are very reasonable and affordable even for my parents who are on a fixed income. I’m a physician and I know the dangers of elderly falling. Older people who are perfectly functional have a fall at home, break a hip and from there it is a tragic downward spiral because it is so hard for the elderly to rehab such a severe injury. Many never get to return home and end up in a nursing facility, others have recurrent falls or iatrogenic illnesses, very few return to their old quality of life. I don’t want that for my dad and I am so thankful that working with Doug has improved my dad’s balance and potentially added several functional, quality years to his life.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I have worked out all my life but was finding that I was struggling with some daily tasks. After my son reached out, I began working with a personal trainer, Geordan. My blood pressure has improved, I'm able to get off the ground with much more ease, and my balance has improved. I'm also curling 20 lbs, which I haven't done in years. I know I'm not 25 anymore, but I feel great!”</image:caption>

<image:caption>“New Years Day 2012 I made the decision to get myself in shape. I had let myself go, eating what I wanted whenever I wanted and packing on 30+ pounds over the years. I decided that if I was going to do this, that I needed some professional help and chose the staff at 805GetFit to help me out by providing personal training. Boy did they!! In eight short weeks, I had dropped twenty-six pounds. I can’t believe that I went from a size 36 pant to a size 32. Incredible! The only bad news… I had to buy all new pants. I look and feel 10 years younger and can’t thank Doug and Michelle enough.”</image:caption>

<image:title>About us - We understand you and we can help!</image:title>
<image:caption>When Michelle saw herself in a family photo and realized that she had let her weight jump by over 30 pounds. She had been taking care of the family business, their three sons, the house, and Doug. The one thing that she had forgotten to take care of was her own health. She decided right then and there to take her life back. She dropped the thirty-plus pounds the hard way- cardio work twice a day and journaling what she ate every day. Doug followed suit and started watching what he ate and exercising (karate) on a regular basis.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The founders of 805 Get Fit, Doug and Michelle Waldman are both Certified Personal Trainers as well as Senior Fitness Specialists, Certified Fitness Nutritional Specialists, and Weight Management Specialists who understand what it takes to get in shape and lose weight in middle age. That's because they ARE middle-aged! “This career has been one of the most rewarding things that I have ever done,” says Michelle, “I have clients taking control of their lives and dropping lots of weight. They feel better, are stronger, more flexible, and have more energy than they have had in decades. There is so much false and misleading information in the media, it is hard to figure out what is the right way to lose weight and get in shape. Our personal experience allows us to really understand what our clients are going through and the frustration that comes with Yo-Yo dieting and all those articles that make it sound like losing weight is the easiest thing in the world.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>When Michelle saw herself in a family photo and realized that she had let her weight jump by over 30 pounds. She had been taking care of the family business, their three sons, the house, and Doug. The one thing that she had forgotten to take care of was her own health. She decided right then and there to take her life back. She dropped the thirty-plus pounds the hard way- cardio work twice a day and journaling what she ate every day.</image:caption>

<image:title>Regain Your Fitness - In-home Training</image:title>
<image:caption>Doug adds, “We decided to offer in-home training because studies show that 80% of American’s don’t want to go to a gym. We figured that if we go to a client’s house then the chances of them staying on track is much higher and I am happy to report that this has indeed been the case. We focus on functional training so we don’t need machines to work on movement patterns that our clients see in real life. This makes it very easy for our clients to get started. We make this a very inviting, very supportive experience.”</image:caption>
